Quad Graphics to Close Saratoga Springs Plant Amid Industry Shifts
In a strategic move aligning with industry shifts, Quad Graphics, formerly known as Quad Graphics, has decided to shut down its Saratoga Springs plant. The decision is influenced by volume contractions in specific print categories, especially newsweeklies, on which the plant has built its reputation. Additionally, the surge in postal costs further contributes to this strategic business decision.
The company, with a presence in Saratoga Springs for nearly four decades, plans to extend relocation offers to some employees and provide severance packages to others. Health insurance coverage for workers will span up to 120 days, dependent on their length of service.
This closure announcement marks the third instance in recent months where manufacturers are opting to exit the Capital Region for other states. Quad Graphics will redirect operations from the closing facility to its home state of Wisconsin, along with expansions in Georgia and Massachusetts.
In July, Essity paper closed its bath tissue mill in South Glens Falls, affecting around 300 employees. The company consolidated operations in Wisconsin, Kentucky, Ohio, and Alabama. Earlier this month, AngioDynamics, a Latham-based medical device manufacturer, declared the shutdown of operations in Queensbury and Glens Falls, impacting 350 jobs. These closures, planned over the next two years, are part of the company's strategy to outsource all production.
The announcement reflects the evolving landscape of the manufacturing sector in the region, influenced by broader industry trends and optimization strategies adopted by companies.
