UK Successfully Tests DragonFire High-Power Laser on Aerial Targets, Demonstrating Its Ability to Cut Through Drones with an Intense Beam of Light

 DragonFire Laser Demonstrates Ability to Destroy Drones in UK Ministry of Defence Trial


The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) announced the successful testing of the DragonFire laser weapon, designed to engage visible targets with pinpoint accuracy. The MoD revealed that DragonFire, described as a "line of sight weapon," showcased its capability to destroy incoming drones during trials at the Hebrides Range in northwest Scotland. The laser weapon is noted for its potential to reduce reliance on expensive ammunition, providing a cost-effective and precise alternative. Both the Army and Royal Navy are considering integrating this technology into their future air defense capabilities. The MoD plans to fund a multi-million pound program to transition DragonFire from research to battlefield use.


Defense Secretary Grant Shapps emphasized the significance of such advanced weaponry, stating, "This type of cutting-edge weaponry has the potential to revolutionize the battlespace by reducing the reliance on expensive ammunition, while also lowering the risk of collateral damage." Shimon Fhima, the director of strategic programs at the MoD, highlighted the success of the DragonFire trials in tracking and engaging high-end effects at range, emphasizing the importance of accelerating the next phase of activity in response to evolving threats.


Led by the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl), the development of DragonFire involves collaboration with industry partners, including MBDA, Leonardo, and QinetiQ. The project is the result of a £100 million joint investment by the MoD and its industry partners.


The laser weapon's ability to engage and destroy targets at the speed of light marks a significant advancement in the UK's defense capabilities.
